Once I got the hang of how to focus with the SX110, I am a very happy user. This is hand-held and if it had been a very large GigaPan, the lettering at this distance would not have been blurred, but then if I had been using the camera at full zoom, I would not have caught Jodi and Christina as I did. In this case, the plusses (the girls) outweighed the minuses (the lettering).

---
Fehler: siehe auch die Fahrstreifen.

Yes, it is rape, grown to make rapeseed oil. Once considered as a poor quality oil/fat suitable for including in animal feed, it is now seen as a valuable commodity as a bio-fuel and as a fashionable, healthy alternative to saturated fats. In some places there are so many of these fields that it looks like England is no longer a green and pleasant land, but a yellow one (and not as pleasant imo). I especially remember a 400km (250mi) bike ride I did in the East where there was nothing else to see (http://tinyurl.com/m2ncjx).

Snapshot: Avenue of trees
Description: Possibly this was the original entrance drive from the main road.

Last Post:
Very interesting detail Chris. I didn't notice this feature when we were up on the hill. I am sure you are right, but the "entrance drive" to what? Possibly Sutton Veny House (http://tinyurl.com/leuzed) but from the maps it looks like there could have been another estate at the end of this avenue of trees.
I discovered a couple of other things from the maps. First, the avenue is marked as an unmetalled road. Do you remember seeing a lane on this side of the road that was marked as a "byway"? Perhaps this avenue is a continuation of the byway? In which case I think we should take the Jag (http://tinyurl.com/lxu5yl) down there next time we are passing to get a feeling of what it was like in bygone times to approach whatever it is you approach in style and splendour.
Second, if you follow the first link above and then change to "OS plus Old OS" you can see that there is a Roman Villa (site of) marked on the old map but not the new one. I wonder if this is one of those antiquities that has something splendid like an intact mosaic that English Heritage doesn't have the resources to excavate, so they protect it by simply not telling anyone about it?
I know of at least one such place. According one of Bill Bryson's books, there is a superb mosaic somewhere in the south that is in a wood covered by a sheet of plastic held down with bricks and hidden with branches and fallen leaves.
Update: Wow! If you look at this other map http://tinyurl.com/mr7job you can see there is a the site of a medieval village right next to where we parked the car - that's not on the current OS map either. Perhaps the people that lived there were responsible for creating the strip lynchets (http://tinyurl.com/lwkmrk) that I failed to get into this shot.

If I were to tavel to Galveston and catch the Bolivar Ferry (not sure what the schedule is because of Hurricane Ike), I could stand at the bow and hold a cracker up as high as I could reach and I assure you that within seconds, a seagull would swoop down and without fear, grab that cracker and take-off quickly with all other sorts of seagulls in hot pursuit. I am not keen on seagulls - noisy, vicious-looking things - so I am unlikely to conduct any experiments that feed one. But you have given me an idea. Back when I used the Lego imager (http://tinyurl.com/ra2nvj) I once had an extremely cute Japanese lady come up to me in the street and squeal in delight at the robot. "Ah Lego! Very cool!". Perhaps I could go to the Royal Crescent in Bath, hide in a tree and dangle the robot from some fishing line. Who knows what I might catch?

These people are of Hispanic origin and are noted for their bravery and their long arms. Back in the early 70s I worked for an oil-field related company that was doing some in-house construction and one of the workers (like what we see in this GigaPan snapshot) was considered by his fellow workers to be some sort of a god for as his was working one day at a site similar to what we see in this snapshot, a co-worker on a higher floor lost his footing and as he was falling, this hero with incredible reflexes, reached out *quickly* grabbed him by his arm and pulled him to safety. If you look closely in this work area, you will see a safety netting that minimises deaths due to falling and probably is a result from this happening that occurred almost 40 years ago,

It looks like most of the input images in the top row are blurry. My guess is that the robot or tripod was still moving for these shots. The top image of each column is shot just after the robot does a large tilt from bottom row to top row, so the robot might need more time to stabilize after these motions. You could pause before these photos, or add a delay time between pictures, and see if that fixes it.

Could be. Ohiopyle was like a hive with the bees returning on Saturday. Instead of honey it was high water on the river and the tributaries. Instead of bees it was kayakers. When the Yough is above 10' on the gauge they close the river to guided rafts. However, it remains open to kayakers. It is said that the Yough above 10' is like being on the Colorado. Most of them put in just below the falls and kayak to just past Railroad Rapids, take out, and walk back across the neck of Ferncliff Peninsula, across the 381 bridge, and back down to the put-in below the falls. This may be someone who took the "scenic" route and followed the edge of the river instead of the sidewalk along the highway.

Your view of Gotham City is *really* spectacular for more reasons than simply being close to the subject. Houston and London do share a common ground though and that is that some of the most amazinfg architecture is hidden from panoramas because of the modern skyscrapers. Bath on the other hand is so rich in amazing panoramas due to its building code and perhaps the protective oversight of Prince Charles.

Not having seen the place on the ground, I'd speculate that the smooth weathering surface on the left side is the intrusive granitic stock and that the rougher, slightly darker surface to the right is the contact metamorphsed metasedimentary rocks that host the pluton.
Much more exciting than climbers and mountain goats if you ask me! ;-)

Chris, Thanks very much for the tree ID info. One of the main interests I have in the Gigapan concept is to find and/or produce good gigapan photos that encourage people to examine an environment and discover and share plant and other species and environmental information that can be found. On our recent Alaska/Canada trip I had to share the D90 (with GPS attachment) and 300mm lens with Katy who has the idea that this is her camera system. Consequently I shot the Gigapans with the Nikon P90. In the future I will make every effort to use the D90, or possibly a D5000.

La flêche pointée vers le haut indique la provenance britannique du canon et l'inscription 12 Pd de chaque côté signifie qu'il tirait des boulets de 12 livres.

We love our personal freedoms here. Many people are drawn to our area because they don't 'fit in' in their home town. This is not middle America. We are not really crazy, but we sometimes act that way (having fun to keep us sane?).
There has been a foot race from the Bay to the Breakers (ocean) every year for the last 150 years. Since not everyone is fast, this has turned into a large moving party where more than 100,000 people attend. There are vastly different lifstyles and beliefs among those attending, but they agree that this is fun and all get along.
Since I love photography (stereo 3D) this is an interesting opportunity for me. Our sons also went, but not with me! I have posted a few images on my website:

Excellent find, I will adjust the GigaPan title to reflect your good eye. I am not sure if this was a private jet flying over. As I was walking around from my car to Sam Houston Statue, I noticed several large jets flying over as what I assume was their entering the flight patf to Hobby Airport. Note: The first time I flew to England, at a relatively low altitude, the plane entered Gatwick's flight path directly over Bath. As I looked out the window at all the marvels, little did I know at the time, the impact that the City of Bath would make on me over the years.

If I remember the sign correctly, these pipes are supposed to be overflow outlets for the storm drains during intense rainfall - so whatever is in the pipe is what ended up in the storm drain.
Probably not just water, though - and the signs clearly indicate that swimming near these things is bad. But it's a popular spot to fish.

Well spotted and THANK YOU. There were many planes passing overhead while I was taking this shot, but none of them were in the right place at the right time (and it is very difficult to interrupt the gigapan robot, move the camera, and resume where you left off). So I am very pleased to see that I did get a plane after all. I expect it has just taken off from Heathrow which iirc is in the direction the plane has come from.

Maybe to a biologist it is biological cuneiform, http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23013&snapshot_id=70279, or to you and I, it may be hieroglyphics, http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23013&snapshot_id=70278, but more than likely it represents some sort of primeval worms. LOL, yeah I kept on noticing this out of the corner of my eye when I was looking at this pano and it does look like some shady creature emerging from the water. In fact it is one of the many beachcombers. For non-Londoners, you may like to know that the beach here is very interesting because although it looks like an ordinary beach with sand and rounded rocks, it is made entirely of London. Old buildings etc. So you are actually walking on 1000 or more years of ground-up civilization. ( If you are lucky you can find Roman remains - shoes etc.)

That's an interesting question. Sir Francis Drake probably didn't get this far South. His ships encountered a lot of foul weather at the bottom of South America, and he didn't actually cross the Drake Passage, but stayed at its northern edge.
His Elizabeth Island is a maritime mystery. Drake was having weather trouble as his ships cleared the Straits of Magellan. He was blown westward and southward, but we don't know how far. Somewhere southwest of Cape Horn he put to shore on an island and resupplied his one remaining ship. He called the place Elizabeth Island. Francis Fletcher, Drake's chapain, recorded the discovery and drew it on a map, but no one seems to have found Elizabeth Island after that one landing.
There are a handful of islands that some modern navigators think may be Drake's Elizabeth Island, but they are all about 1000 miles away from the South Orkneys, off to the North West, over by Tierra del Fuego.
Thanks for the bit of Antarctic history and for looking at my panos.

This is an recent addition to the castle, built by German occupying forces during WWII. If you scan around many of my GigaPan's taken in the Channel Islands you will see similar concrete constructions. During WWII, Jersey and the other Channel Islands were the only British soil occupied by German forces and between 1940 - 1945 Hitler ordered that they be fortified and integrated into his "Atlantic Wall". Also note that the Channel Island's were not liberated until a year after D-day, and we celebrate our Liberation Day 9 May 1945 as a Public Holiday.

Welcome to Houston... it is a Houston police department helicopter and is only in this view either for monitoring police activity in the Rice Village or something to do with traffic congestion near Rice University... I would opt for some sort of police activity in the Village.

Good observation. I was tempted to get that silky look -- I've taken nice milky shots of rivulets with my Pentax K20. Here, the odd wind gust suggested otherwise. And I was worried about the time for exposure file saving being more than the frame-to-frame timing of the gigapan (which I'll admit I forgot how to set).

From its color and weathering pattern I'd feel pretty comfortable calling the grey rock a limestone (even without dropping acid on it to see if it fizzes). The darker bands are chert or flint.
If I was back at my office I'd pull out some guidebooks and/or maps of the area to tell you what formation it is, but alas, I'm on the road for another week or two.

My first thought was this was not the same pig, but after you take into account the bleaching effect of the overexposure in the other snapshot, they start to look more similar: the pink areas in this snapshot look like the ornage areas in the other one. There is no sign of any green in the other snapshot (to my eyes, on my monitor), but I would say the 'L' or 'V' shape just behind and below the pig's right ear is the same in both.
I'm going for 98% probably right on this one. Good eye!

I think you are probably right Amazing - well done! It is difficult to be certain because we are looking at different sides of the pigs in the two snapshots. The only think that stops me from saying it is *definitely' the same pig is there is no sign of the pinkish-brown wiggly stripe that runs from the ear to the foot in the other other snapshot, but as I say, that could be because we are looking at a different side of the pig and the stripe is not on the other side of the pig?
OTOH the green and gold colours and the general pattern make it a more or less certain id.
So, a score of 0.95 out of 1 (i.e. 95% probability).

The former. Bristol is one of the few cities in the UK that has really gone cycling-friendly. There are bike paths everywhere and not just alongside roads. Cycling on designated paths that don't follow roads is a real pleasure that reminds me of my time in Amsterdam.

I am not looking for bigfoot. There are many marks on the land that do not come from nature. I have found many stone foundations, indian rock mortars, Miwok dams, Spanish trails, burial sites, shell mounds, bulldozed sites, and other stuff. Often a feature simply seems out of place.
I have been in bigfoot country and seen only tourist shops and large trees. And I have meet tree dwelling students in redwoods on the North Coast.

California is generally blessed with good weather and diverse geography, culture, and interesting work. That is what attracted me.
But you might notice only one other person in the photo on a bicycle climbing the hill. My friend hid from the camera and our wives are happy to see us go on outings. We are probably unusual, but don't care too much, being normal is not a worthy goal.
Not everyone seeks out the ultimate photo. But for those who do, the world is full of "eyecandy" and the quest is renewing. Life is best when we work to experience the journey and influence the outcomes.
