I see your point and can readily sympathize with you because on my P&S, I have to guess at the zoom horsepower and I do have digital zoom set and sometimes, I have gone into digital zoom inadvertently, but I have not seen anything like an artifact occur.
When I took hand-held shots with a Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 lens I knew I had to use 70mm all the time because I would rotate the zoom counter clockwise and easily hold it in that position. If I had to shoot 50 photos at exactly 81mm using this particular lens, it would be impossible.
The best solution is to find a P&S that has no distortion at the high end of focal length, but to the best of my knowledge, that beast does not exist.
About ROM upgrades... not sure as to how that could be done or how easy it is to even access the current ROM for removal.
To answer your previous question, well, I am not that skilled in these topics, so I would give the floor to another more qualified than I to answer them.

For a man of such encyclopedic knowledge of Bath, I am surprised you don't know that the Normans didn't build cathedral towers with staircases wide enough for rhinos. This custom didn't start until Elizabethan times when they built very wide staircases.
'So what did the Normans do with their rhinos when they came to worship?' I hear you ask. Easy - they left them in the car park.

Wells (no pun intended), you can travel the length and breadth of England and find nothing like the worn steps you saw leading up to the Chapter House... maybe unless you wanted to try York Minster and try the circular steps to the top. As I recall, they were pretty well worn also, but not worthy of a photograph as Evan's eye discovered.

Definitely photoshopped.
1) The shadow is too perfect, all of the other shadows are blurred around the edges.
2) The image is too crisp because it was taken by another camera from a different distance.
3) There is a light border around the antennas where the original background was erased.
But still, it's very cool that the gigapan has interesting details like this! It certainly could not have been achieved without image editing.

Burning Man is a crazy festival held once a year out in the dessert. College students and people from all over the country come to camp out, build structures, burn them and party.
The eight-day festival event takes place in Black Rock City, a temporary camp city in Black Rock Desert in the U.S. state of Nevada, 90 miles north-northeast of Reno, ending on the American Labor Day holiday in September.
The event is described by organizers as an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance and takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening.
